Many shoppers mistakenly believe that the holiday shopping season ends on the Saturday after Black Friday. While Cyber Monday is still big for several retailers, most don’t give it the kind of attention it once had back when every retailers didn’t have a big online presence. Many of the biggest sales of the season fall on Black Friday, but there are plenty of retailers that build excitement through additional sales during December.
Shoppers who weren’t able to snap up everything on their shopping lists can still shop these lucrative sales events. As we get closer to Christmas, it’s also possible some retailers will host better deals than we saw during Black Friday.
Giving Tuesday: Dec. 1
Giving Tuesday was launched in 2012 as a day for people to do good to one another. Over the years, hundreds of retailers and millions of people have used the day to create all kinds of experiences towards making the world a better place.
Many retailers offer incentives to shop and promotional events on Giving Tuesday, and payment processors offer retailers donation-matching. As the day is mostly based around donations and doing good for others, the best way to shop is to find merchants taking part in any form of donation matching or other charitable contribution, so that knocking out products on your shopping list becomes a way to help others.
Green Monday: Dec. 14
eBay launched the first Green Monday ever in 2007. eBay felt that the second Monday in December was, at the time, the last day shoppers could shop online and be guarantees to receive their products in time for the holidays. Over the years, the shopping day has caught on with other retailers, specifically because it reminds shoppers exactly how little time they have left to get their remaining shopping done.
eBay isn’t the only retailer that gets in on the Green Monday sale events. Amazon, Target, Best Buy and Walmart all have had sales events starting as far back as 2015. Each year, retailers have done more and more with the sale. With the pandemic forcing many retailers to open up new ways to shop online, we predict that this year could be a huge boom in Green Monday shoppers as more retailers may look to take advantage of the sales day.
Super Saturday: Dec. 19
Super Saturday is traditionally known as the last Saturday before Christmas. This is a time when many retailers know that shoppers are in a pinch to finish up all the gift buying left on their shopping list, and as a result there is a spike in deals and sale events. Similar to Cyber Monday, Super Saturday features loads of one-day-only shopping events to help those last minute shoppers.
With Christmas falling on a Friday in 2020, Super Saturday shouldn’t feel as pressured this year, as shoppers will have six days to get that last minute shopping completed. And, even though it might not be possible to shop gifts on time, six days is plenty of time to place an order for curbside pickup or same-day delivery from retailers that offer it. Still, due to the pandemic, we expect retailers will push through plenty of one-day online shopping events to help empty our wallets just before the holidays.
Day after Christmas: Dec. 26
The day after Christmas is, traditionally, a massive sale day for many retailers. Almost all holiday items go immediately on sale, including holiday decor, Christmas trees, gift wrap and accessories, holiday candy and chocolates, and many other seasonal items. Dec. 26 is almost always the best shopping day to save big on next year’s seasonal decorations and items.
Many retailers also tend to discount clothing on the day after Christmas as they look to clear out inventory heading into the new year.
Semi-annual sales
Both Bath & Body Works and Victoria’s Secret traditionally hold semi-annual sales in Dec. This year has been anything but traditional, but the odds are still good that both of these retailers will host these events this month.
Last year, Bath & Body Works held their semi-annual sale on Dec. 26 and it is likely to happen again around that time this year. While no official date has been given for the event, we still anticipate it being similar in style to previous years. The company held their summer semi-annual sale event of 2020 back in June. During the event, shoppers can expect up to 50% off a wide variety of items, as well as cheap pricing on fragrances, candles and fragrance refills.
Similar to Bath & Body Works, Victoria’s Secret also tends to hold their second semi-annual sale event of the year after Christmas. They also held their summer semi-annual sale event of 2020 in June. There is still no official date listed for the sale, but in 2019 the event started on Dec. 26, so we anticipate the 2020 date to be on or around that day. Previous sales have seen massive discounts on a variety of products, including sleepwear, beauty products and perfumes.
Sam’s Club December Savings Week
Sam’s Club is set to begin their December savings event, Savings Week, on Dec. 5. The event will run through Dec. 12. Sam’s Club has put out an ad highlighting various ‘sneak peeks,’ which includes savings on smart gadgets, televisions, holiday food, home goods, and toys. The Savings Week sale marks yet another way shoppers can save big before the holidays!
