The pandemic continues to force retailers to change how they approach the upcoming holiday season. Black Friday 2020 will forever be remembered as the Black Friday where stores went the extra mile to provide quick, safe and memorable experiences for shoppers both online and in stores. Target (TGT) is the latest retailer to announce upcoming changes to their in-store shopping experience during the holidays.
Target improved its curbside pickup in March by adding several outside pickup parking spots to its stores across the nation. For the holidays, Target is taking things a step further by adding additional safety protocols and updating in-store shopping features.
Contactless checkout via Wallet
Wallet, a feature inside of the Target app, allows shoppers to store payment cards, gift cards or their Target RedCard. And now, using Wallet inside of the Target app allows shoppers to check out contactlessly (without touching the hand scanner) at self-checkout stations. After sliding their items over the scanner, shoppers can generate a barcode with their phones and scan it through the product-scanning area (instead of having to pick up a hand scanner). Shoppers using Wallet can still take advantage of RedCard payments, Target Circle offers, gift cards and weekly ads or coupons.
Shopping reservations
Target will continue to limit the total number of shoppers in stores during the holiday season to help with social distancing and prevent crowding. If shoppers are concerned about having to wait in line outside of the store for their chance to go inside, Target is offering line reservations so shoppers can wait in their car for their turn to head in. Text messages will notify shoppers when it is their turn to go inside.
Check out anywhere
In addition to the Wallet checkout option, Target is upping the number of devices Target employees use to help customers check out anywhere in the store. The handheld units are called MyCheckout devices and help customers avoid checkout lines.
Same-day services expanded
Target also released detailed information on how they plan to enhance their Same-Day services throughout the holiday season. Improved options include doubling up on the current number of Drive Up (curbside) spots, adding personal identification numbers to confirm orders within the Target app, updating the Target app for easier store pickups and adding thousands of holiday gifts to the list of items available for Drive Up or Order Pickup.
