Stores Open on Thanksgiving 2020

Everything’s different in 2020, and retailers’ tradition of opening on Thanksgiving is just another thing that’s changed.

After roughly a decade of pushing the envelope by opening ever earlier on Thanksgiving night (make that afternoon), retailers including Walmart, Target, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Best Buy and Macy’s have all announced they will stay closed on Thanksgiving this year.

So, which retailers will even be open on Thanksgiving 2020? This year, your Thanksgiving Day shopping options will be limited to pharmacies and grocery stores. Many will stay open, not for doorbuster shoppers, but for those who need to pick up food and medical necessities.

Stores open on Thanksgiving 2020

These are the stores we confirmed will stay open on Thanksgiving, either by calling stores or via information on their websites. Note that many will close early. We’ll update our list as more stores announce their plans — or change course and decide to close after all.

  • Albertsons: Albertsons will be open, but hours will be reduced. We confirmed that some locations will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • CVS: The drugstore keeps its 24-hour locations open on holidays, including Thanksgiving. Some stores, however may have limited hours.
  • Giant: Several stores confirmed they’ll be open on Thanksgiving (they’re open every year on Thanksgiving), but hours haven’t been set yet.
  • Harris Teeter: Stores will be open on Thanksgiving, but hours haven’t yet been determined.
  • HEB: Stores will be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Hy-Vee: Stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pharmacy hours will differ.
  • Kroger: Several stores confirmed that Kroger will stay open on Thanksgiving. However, they’ll be closing early.
  • Meijer: Meijer is open 364 days a year, including Thanksgiving, for normal hours (6 a.m. to 12 a.m.). It’s closed only on Christmas.
  • Rite Aid: The drugstore chain generally keeps its doors open on major holidays. Note that its pharmacy operates different hours from the store, so be sure to check ahead of time if you need to pick up a prescription.
  • Safeway: Stores will be open on Thanksgiving (and on Christmas as well). However exact hours have not been announced. Usually, stores close several hours early on major holidays.
  • Sprouts Farmers Market: Sprouts confirmed via an email that it will be open on Thanksgiving Day.
  • Starbucks: Select locations will be open for limited Thanksgiving hours. This is in keeping with past years. However, many will be closed. So make sure to check your preferred location’s plans ahead of time. Starbucks locations inside Target will also be closed, as Target is closed on Thanksgiving this year.
  • Walgreens: As a drugstore, Walgreens also keeps many of its locations open on Thanksgiving. Be sure to call ahead and ask about limited hours, especially if you need to pick up a prescription.
  • Wegmans: Stores will be open on Thanksgiving, but hours will be reduced. Expect most locations to close by 4 p.m.
  • Whole Foods: Several stores confirmed they will be open (and are usually open for reduced hours on Thanksgiving), but hours have not been announced yet.

If you are missing the tradition of shopping on Thanksgiving, you can still find deals online. Some retailers (including Macy’s) have revealed they’ll be running Black Friday deals online on Thanksgiving Day. And, in past years, most major retailers have offered the same deals online as they did in stores anyway. Deals for popular items will likely sell out just as fast online as they do in stores, however. So, just because you don’t have to race for an in-store doorbuster doesn’t mean you won’t have to move fast.
